The Race Equality Foundation’s Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities (SFSC) team have been running a programme of work around family conflict and, in particular, conflict between those in parenting/caring roles. This has included our:

• Reducing Parental Conflict Toolkit funded by Public Health England-funded
• Stronger Relationships programme
• Training and resources for SFSC facilitators to integrate into delivery of the 13 week SFSC programme.

With the support of DWP Challenge Fund 2, our team has reached more than 900 parents since September 2023, two thirds of them from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds,  through an adapted version of the SFSC 13 week programme as well as delivering two six week online courses.

Our work has been evaluated by Dr Anita Mehay at the City University of London and the report will be published by the Foundation later this year.

Designed for use by public health nurses, including, midwives, health visitors, school nurses, general practice nurses and other professionals working with families in the first 1001 days of a child’s life and beyond, to reduce health inequalities and improve health and wellbeing for children, through reducing harmful non violent parental conflict.

In this interview, Dominic shares his experience of participating in one of our 6-week SFSC Stronger Relationships Programme. Motivated by a colleague’s recommendation, Dominic sought conflict resolution strategies to enhance his family relationships. His journey highlights the course’s impact on his relationships, underscoring the need for tailored outreach to engage and support Black fathers effectively.
