We welcome that some attention has been paid to poorer experiences and outcomes for people of Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic backgrounds by the Darzi review.

However, simply calling for the reasons to be “better understood” does not suggest a strong commitment to taking meaningful action against the effects of systemic racism.

It is not an exaggeration, to say that that for too many Black, Asian and minoritised ethnic people, their experience of health care was poor long before the current situation detailed by Lord Darzi.

Unfortunately, it seems we must wait to see if those working to improve the NHS will acknowledge the root causes of these inequalities—and even longer for meaningful action to address them.
