Will the Budget announced today by Rachel Reeves be one that tackles racial inequality? The past 14 years has seen inequality on the rise with a disproportionate impact on Black, Asian, and minoritised communities. The Government’s announcement of a 6.7% rise in the national minimum wage from April is promising, with clear benefits for many; however, it remains uncertain how these changes will address underlying inequalities. Speculation points to the continuation of the two-child benefit cap—a policy long criticised for disproportionately affecting ethnic minorities, who are more likely to have larger families. As of April 2024, this cap impacted around 27,000 households claiming Universal Credit, affecting an estimated 100,000 children. We wait to hear if racial inequality will be tackled by the budget.
