In response to the Prime Minister’s announcement of the end of all Covid restrictions, Jabeer Butt OBE, CEO of the Race Equality Foundation said:

“Whilst we would all prefer to live without the need for restrictions, this can only be done if public health is also protected. Unfortunately, public health now seems to be on the back burner. Given continuing evidence that Black and disadvantaged communities are not being reached by public health measures, the Government needs to show how it is going to protect everyone and prevent the lifting of restrictions from continuing to hit these minority groups hardest.

“The proposals also pay little attention to the big picture. As the Prime Minister seeks to close this chapter, what practical steps will be put in place to address the long-term inequalities highlighted by the pandemic? Minority ethnic groups have borne the brunt of this pandemic, in the most brutal of circumstances, and their experiences must help form our recovery as a nation.”
