Our CEO Jabeer Butt has commented on the discrimination experienced by black, Asian and minority ethnic people looking for housing.

The BBC Newsbeat article highlights the case of “Zara”, an Asian women who was accused of trying to look white in her SpareRoom profile by her prospective landlord.

While this type of racial discrimination has been illegal for decades, it is still rife in the poorly-regulated private rented housing sector. Research from Shelter published in 2021 found that over one in ten black and Asian people had experienced similar types of racism while looking for housing.

Jabeer highlighted that “Right to Rent” legislation introduced as part of the Hostile Environment for undocumented migrants was contributing to the discrimination experienced by black, Asian and minority ethnic tenants.
