Big Ben and Westminster at sunset
Published On: 15 April 2026

We are proud to be part of a coalition of civil society organisations writing to the Secretary of State in response to the Government’s recently published social cohesion strategy, Protecting What Matters.

While we share a commitment to tackling hate and unlawful activity, this joint letter highlights concerns about the proposed expansion of Charity Commission powers – in particular, the potential impact on the ability of charities to campaign and advocate.

At a time when civic space is already under pressure, we are calling for clear safeguards and meaningful consultation with the sector to ensure that any changes are proportionate, workable, and do not limit legitimate civil society campaigning.
