This project was initiated as a result of conversations between Race Equality Foundation, Flourishing Lives, and HEAR Equality and Human Rights Network. The plan was to bring together arts and wellbeing professionals from across the Flourishing Lives coalition and representatives from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic voluntary and community groups for open and exploratory conversations. These conversations would explore ways in which arts organisations could improve their inclusive practice to ensure that people from a BAME background are genuinely engaged, and furthermore would increase the direct involvement of these communities in the development of cultural programmes, and the valuing of lived experience. A key component would be to ensure the fairer distribution of resources, so that BAME-led arts organisations could play a key role. In achieving this, it was hoped that the often-evidenced link between the arts and improvements in wellbeing would be better extended to BAME communities.

Reimagining Resourcing: Piecing together a new funding system for BME-led projects and organisations
This event is aimed at BME-led projects and organisations making vital interventions in the arts, health and well-being. We will have input from funders seeking to better support this cohort and foundation-watchers who can reflect on recent changes.
Together participants will seek to understand changes in funding practice in the last year and experiences of engaging with funders. How can positive changes be built upon and extended? How might they be the basis for a new funding system?
This workshop recognises the work still required to properly fund BME-led projects and organisations and racial equity more generally. It also tries to mark out a pathway towards serious investment in life-affirming racial justice.
