Yesterday, The Police Race Action Plan was published. It is the biggest coordinated effort ever across every police force in England and Wales to improve trust and confidence in policing among Black communities.
Jabeer Butt OBE notes:
This comprehensive and detailed action plan is welcome. The measures set out have the potential to address the lack of trust felt by Black communities in the police force. However, plans and commitments aren’t new, what’s missing is implementation. The data shows that there is not only a disproportionate stop and search of Black men, but also greater use of force. Within the action plan it notes that the use of force is five times more likely. Unfortunately, the latest data shows that this disproportionality persists. Despite Black people make-up 3.5 per cent of the UK population, they make-up at least 13 per cent of those whom the police used force. The plan must lead to change in these experiences.
