The treatment of Indian nurses recruited by a prominent social care chain, as revealed in the Guardian’s investigation, is deeply distressing. These dedicated nurses arrived in the UK with the aim of helping disabled and vulnerable children, only to find themselves in dire circumstances.

The prolonged period without pay, along with the resulting financial struggles and mounting debt, is completely unacceptable. The false assurances given regarding wages, accommodation, and employment terms compound the injustice. It is disheartening to witness the shattered dreams of these nurses due to the actions of the agency and the care group. Companies have a duty of care to their workforce, but this case is clearly exploitation.

Immediate and decisive action is urgently needed to address this situation and ensure that these nurses receive the support and justice they deserve. The social care agency must take swift measures to rectify the issue by providing the promised financial assistance and fair wages to these workers.

Our social care sector is experiencing the greatest workforce crisis in its history – one in three care workers left their jobs last year, and those who remain are overstretched, work overtime to deliver complex care and are low paid – this is having a devastating impact on quality of care. A situation like this one, only makes matters worse.

Government intervention is necessary to safeguard the rights and well-being of international workers in similar circumstances, as well as the patients who depend on their crucial social care. Big social care chains that profit hugely from the labour of international workers while neglecting their well-being should not be allowed to operate. We need to create a just and equitable environment for all migrant workers in the UK.
