People of Black Caribbean and mixed-Caribbean heritage have played a fundamental role in key public services, such as the NHS, public transport, and social care. However, despite significant contributions, they have not equally shared in Britain’s post-war prosperity. Evidence suggests that racism has compounded socio-economic disadvantage, contributing to poorer health and wellbeing, including higher rates of chronic illness and mental health conditions.

Commissioned by Community Health Equity Manchester (CHEM), this research project aims to delve deeper into this issue by understanding the health and wellbeing experiences of the Black and mixed-heritage community residing in Manchester. It will address gaps in our knowledge by providing a nuanced understanding of this community’s health and wellbeing needs.

We are currently on Phase 2 of the project, conducting interviews and focus groups exploring personal experiences of education, housing and employment, as well as exploring themes of family and community.

This project will culminate into a report highlighting key themes and insights from the research and a series of maps/cartograms showing the geographical spread of the community.
