Earlier this month, the Race Equality Foundation were really pleased to be a part of, and host, an online webinar with over 170 Care Quality Commission colleagues exploring issues around dementia care. The webinar was chaired by Jabeer Butt, Chief Executive of the Race Equality Foundation, and organised with Latoya Tawodzera, CQC Senior Public Engagement Insight Officer.
In the meeting we heard from Naaheed Mukadam, who has conducted research on dementia risks in people from ethnic minority backgrounds, including pre and post diagnosis. You can read about Naaheed’s research on the Alzheimer’s Society website.
We were also be joined by Sahdia Parveen and Richard Cheston who were the co-leads for the South Asian Dementia Pathway (ADAPT) research project. The research set out to create resources of culturally appropriate assessments and interventions which support people from South Asian communities at various stages across the dementia care pathway.
After exploring current dementia care research and taking the opportunity to revisit the better practice that the ADAPT toolkit outlines, there was an opportunity for participants to provide feedback on their own experiences and awareness of dementia care. Through a combination of inspection and personal based experiences, the webinar reflected on and addressed how current providers are commissioning care, thinking about existing integrated care systems that we may be able to learn from.
As the Care Quality Commission continue to formulate their future plans for dementia care, we feel that the webinar took place at an opportune time and are delighted that as an organisation they are planning to take current work forward and incorporate elements from the different presentations into their dementia strategy. We hope that everyone who participated in the event will build on the discussion and use it to influence their inspection activity.
