The SFSC team has been working hard sharing all the great work and learning from the last 18 months on reducing parental conflict through the SFSC Stronger Relationships Programme. In the last month, members of the team have spoken at the Foundations National Conference on Building early help and family support around parental relationships, a DWP event celebrating the work of the Challenge Fund, a DWP session for Local Authority leads to think about the role of RPC over the next year in their areas, and delivered a webinar for Foundations and the Staff College on anti racist practice and parental conflict.

We have shown how, with the support of DWP Challenge Fund 2, we were able to reach more than 900 parents, two thirds of them from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, through an adapted version of the SFSC 13 week programme as well as delivering two six week online courses. The courses supported co-parents to manage their adult relationships; helping parents to better identify conflict, understand its consequences and improve the way they deal with it.

Key messages from our learning has been:
  • the important role of the third sector in providing services to minoritised families
  • the significance of trusted relationships in discussing sensitive subjects and in engaging communities
  • the importance of tailoring services including providing them in community languages
  • offering a range of services including in person, online, closed targeted groups (eg.dads only), as well as mixed open access options
Our evaluation demonstrated that Stronger Families was able to have a significant impact on reducing parental conflict and successfully engaged Black, Asian and minority ethnic mothers and fathers in exploring how to build healthier communication and relationships. The work was evaluated by Dr Anita Mehay at City University and the report will be published by the Foundation later this year.
We are inviting service commissioners to contact us for further information and licensing opportunities so we can continue to support parents and carers across the country to access this valuable provision. Contact leandra@racefound.org.uk
