The Faith and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Coalition has launched a briefing on the role of faith leaders in ending violence against women and girls called: The Role of Faith Leaders; Gate Openers or Gate Closers in Ending Violence against Women and Girls?

The coalition consulted survivors, faith leaders, and women from faith communities over the past year. The briefing highlights best practices and lessons learned about the role of faith leaders and communities in ending violence against women and girls.

The coalition believes its recommendations will help engage faith leaders and communities more strongly in policy decisions, resource allocation, and practice related to ending violence against women and girls.  Research shows communities often first know about abuse and can either facilitate or impede women seeking help.

Faith groups are often on the front lines supporting isolated and vulnerable women before statutory agencies. They provide practical support like temporary housing, food, financial help, advocacy and social support.

The briefing highlights how faith leaders can use their influence to educate people about violence against women and girls, and recognise common efforts in working together to help survivors.
