Race Equality Foundation welcomes organ donation announcement

Race Equality Foundation welcomes the Prime Minister’s announcement that there will be a consultation on an opt-out organ donation system in England. A similar system has been in place in Wales since 2015 and Scotland is also looking at adopting a soft-opt out.

Jabeer Butt OBE, Race Equality Foundation Chief Executive said: “This is very welcome news, and should have a significant impact on improving the health and wellbeing of black and minority ethnic communities. Any new law will need to be accompanied by awareness-raising and community engagement to make the impact that we all want to see.

Black and minority ethnic communities have some of the lowest rates of organ donation, yet some of the highest needs. Under the current system this means people can wait for months or years longer for an organ transplant. An opt-out system offers real hope to those people waiting for a life-saving or life-transforming donation.”
