Services were delivered along the lines of a \u2018one-size-fits-all\u2019 model, and when the needs of people and families from non-white communities were considered, this was considered an afterthought. <\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b04fbe3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"b04fbe3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5f877aa elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"5f877aa\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s been far too long that services have said, here we are, come to us. But when people come into the services, then it\u2019s one size fits all \u2026 So I think services need to \u2026 go into the community, with the voluntary and community organisations that are already in there \u2026 It\u2019s a culture change, it\u2019s the services that need to change their culture completely.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-q-footer\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"elementor-blockquote__author\">South Asian community worker<\/cite>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad7bbfc elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"ad7bbfc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2d0649e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2d0649e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Often the experience of people from South Asian communities was that dementia services were not intended for them. This might take the form of meeting on a Friday (which is a religious day) or in a church hall or working to a calendar which, while it accommodates the Easter holiday, does not recognise Ramadan. One of our contributors, a family carer, described this as a \u2018<i>Caucasian-centric\u2019<\/i> service model. We were told that people from South Asian communities had to work \u201c<i>ten times harder\u201d <\/i>to justify themselves and their need for support.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b11ec8e elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"b11ec8e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re only there to tick a box \u2026 I\u2019m a member of a CCG, and sometimes I feel that I\u2019m just there so that they can say that they\u2019ve talked from somebody from a BME community\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-q-footer\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite new service developments to provide evidence that they meet the requirements of the Public Sector Equality Duty or otherwise reduce health inequality.<\/li><li>Funding for all dementia services should be dependent on organisations demonstrating that they have met equality targets.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element Existing dementia services should:<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c9aae3b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c9aae3b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li>Ensure that data about the ethnicity of service users is collected. While most services ask practitioners to do this, they may not always do so either because they feel embarrassed to ask service users or because they don\u2019t see the point in doing so.<\/li><li>Use this data to audit the take up of services broken down by clients\u2019 ethnicity. Population projections for older (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poppi.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.poppi.org.uk<\/a>) and younger (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pansi.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.pansi.org.uk<\/a>) people can help to identify anticipated levels of uptake, against which current levels of service provision can be compared.<\/li><li>Where inequalities of service uptake are identified, service managers need to develop an action plan to remedy this. Commissioners should consider innovative methods of funding services to ensure equity of uptake.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-128d6d3 elementor-icon-list--layout-traditional elementor-list-item-link-full_width elementor-widget elementor-widget-icon-list\" data-id=\"128d6d3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"icon-list.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul class=\"elementor-icon-list-items\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-check\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\">Greater flexibility about service provision.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6538612 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6538612\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Statutory<i> <\/i>services should be more flexible around service provision, including the hours and days that they will be open. For instance, during Ramadan, services may need to be available in the evenings, not just during the day.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da503c5 elementor-icon-list--layout-traditional elementor-list-item-link-full_width elementor-widget elementor-widget-icon-list\" data-id=\"da503c5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"icon-list.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul class=\"elementor-icon-list-items\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-check\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\">Continuity of funding.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0d9413b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0d9413b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Funding for community sector organisations should be on the same basis as for statutory services, rather than being based around specific projects that perhaps lasts for just one or two years.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8c7f175 elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"8c7f175\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re just going full circles \u2026 It\u2019s a tick box exercise. You cannot expect miracles overnight \u2026 BAME communities have been disadvantaged, ignored for such a long time that they don\u2019t trust people now \u2026  You have to build that trust, and how do you build that trust?
